An exciting new action adventure series with an impressive cast will be streaming on Netflix from September 22nd.
Starring Kim Nam-gil, Seo Hyun, and Yoo Jae-myung, Song of the Bandits takes us back to 1920s Gando, a Korean settlement in Manchuria.
Because of the Japanese invasion and occupation of Korea in the early 20th century, many Koreans had immigrated to Manchuria (now part of northeastern China). On April 18, 1906, the Japanese military also invaded Gando. Large Koreans settlements had been established in the area, and the Korean people rebelled against the invaders.
Lee Yoon (Kim Nam-gil), a former Japanese soldier, leaves for Gando, a land of lawlessness, to pay the debt for a tragedy that had occurred six years ago. After witnessing another tragedy in Joseon (former Kingdom of Korea), he decides to fight against the Japanese occupation by leading a gang of bandits. Soon he joins forces with Choi Chung-soo (Yoo Jae-myung), a former Independence Army leader and skilled with the bow and sword, who had settled in Gando to protect his family.
Nam Hee-shin (Seo Hyeon), an independence activist, hides her true identity as head of the railway bureau of the Japanese Government-General of Korea. Nam plans a risky operation to raise funds for the Korean independence fight. She hires gunfighter Eon Nyeon-i (Lee Ho-jung) to steal funds from the Gando Line railroad, a key project of the Japanese Government-General of Korea. But Eon Nyeon-i , who will do anything for money, receives a more attractive offer: the assassination of Lee Yoon.
Lee Kwang-il (Lee Hyun-wook) became the youngest Korean lieutenant of the Imperial Japanese Empire thanks to Lee Yoon, then a Nobi (serf) and his subordinate. Lee Kwang-il felt a deep sense of betrayal when Lee Yoon, whom he had considered a friend, left. After proposing to Nam Hee-sin, with whom he was in a romantic relationship, Lee Kwang-il learns that the Independence Army is interested in the funds for the construction of the Gando Railway Line, and was already on its way to Gando.
A thrilling story unfolds on the Manchurian frontier as thieves, the Independence Army, the Japanese army, and the bandits try to get their hands on the enormous railroad construction funds that are being transported to Gando.
Director Hwang Jun-hyeok (Black Dog, Bad Guys: Vile City, Squad 38) and writer Han Jeong-hoon (My Fellow Citizens, Bad Guys: Vile City, Squad 38), known for spectacular, exhilarating action, joined forces for this Korean western series of nine episodes.
